ÖNORM Z 1020

The ÖNORM Z 1020 “First aid kits for workplaces and construction sites” specifies the requirements, contents and tests of first aid kits.

First aid kits should enable professional first aid at the scene of an accident. The dressing materials contained in the first aid kits must comply with the law.

The number of first aid kits required depends on the number of employees, the potential danger and the quick accessibility (first aid within 3 minutes).

The following guidelines apply:

·         Type 1 for areas of 1 to 5 employees

·         Type 2 for areas of 6 to 20 employees

If there are more than 20 employees, the number of first aid kits must be determined according to the guidelines and operational conditions.

First aid kits should be checked at least every 12 months. It's often advisable to check them every three or six months if your company employs a large number of workers.

Installation, setup and periodic inspection of first aid kits:

First aid kits must be installed or set up in clearly visible and easily accessible locations so that they are protected from direct heat exposure (e.g. from sunlight or proximity to radiators).

The installation locations must be marked with information signs.

The contents of the first aid kits must be checked at regular intervals by persons trained in first aid to ensure that they are complete, that the packaging is undamaged and that they are usable.
